PSD Mike Moeykens Submits Resignation as CO

Brothers,

Today, PSD Mike Moeykens submitted his resignation, effective immediately, as a Conferring Officer (CO) in the 3rd Degree Exemplification. He is suffering from some health issues. He feels it is for the good of the Order that he steps down from this role. He plans to continue to be an active Knight and support the team with coaching the current and future Co’s with their lines.

Brother Mike served in the Arizona jurisdiction for 22 years as a CO. He successfully conducted 111 - 3rd Degree Exemplifications during these 22 years. Prior to moving to Arizona, Mike served as the State Deputy of the great state of Vermont. Mike has been a true friend to me, to the state, and to the Order. He has offered me great advice and counsel throughout my years as a State Officer. I am proud and fortunate to know such a great man.

I spoke with Mike this afternoon. He is in good spirits and promises he will be active and we will see him often at various Knights of Columbus events.

I plan to make Mike the class honoree at the March 14, 2015 - 2nd and 3rd Degree Exemplification, in Vail, AZ. If his health allows, he will be attending this degree. All are welcome to say hello to Mike after the degree concludes that day.

Mike needs our prayers and best wishes.

Please feel free to share this message with your councils and assemblies.

Vivat Jesus!

New Arizona State Officers and District Deputies

Brothers,

As you may be aware, and with great sadness, our worthy State Secretary Skip Hopler tendered his resignation as a State Officer, effective December 6, 2014. His "paying" job is consuming a great deal of his time and energy, with much travel in the near future. He believes he will in his job for several more years beyond his original plan. He understands the large time it requires to successfully fulfill his State Secretary position, and the increase time and energy to successfully fulfill the pending State Deputy position he may very well hold in the future. He also has his family to take care of.

Skip is a great man, with many talents. He will be sorely missed by the State Council and especially by me. We have become great friends and trusted partners serving together over the years as District Deputies, State Chairmen, and State Officers. I have asked Skip to consider remaining in the State family as a State Director or Chairman, as well as continue serving as a Ceremonialist. Of course, in his usual manner, he said yes. He will work to transition his responsibilities to the next State Secretary.

I have reviewed this with Supreme via our Worthy MPC Jose Jiménez. Supreme recommends that the State Deputy exercises Section 58 of the Supreme Charter, Constitution, and Laws of the Knights of Columbus, "Appointments to fill vacancies in any office of the State Council shall be made for the unexpired term by the State Officers. In case of any vacancy in the office of alternate to the Supreme Council, such vacancy shall be filled by the State Deputy."

I'd like to thank the Past State Deputies (PSDs) for their kind words and support through this process. I, like them, only want to do what is best for the State and the Order. After much thought and constructive coaching from many of the PSDs, I am very pleased to announce that I installed the following worthy gentlemen into their new State Council positions, in public, on Saturday morning December 6, 2014, at the State Mid-Year Meeting:

·         State Secretary – Sean Halpain
·         State Treasurer – Tom Kalisz
·         State Advocate – Mario Vassallo
·         State Warden – Kevin McCarthy
·         District Deputy #21- Paul Connor
·         District Deputy #32 – Gary Johnson
·         State Program Director – Chet Yancy
·         State Youth Director – Skip Hopler

Please welcome them in their new positions. They are currently working to transition into their new roles. I appreciate your patience with us as this may that a month or so for everyone to be up to speed on their new roles. I have the highest of confidence in these Brother Knights to serve the State and the Order to the best of their abilities.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Vivat Jesus!

Please Act Now and Register for the Tucson Men's Conference!

Brothers,

Please act now and register for the Tucson Men's Conference!

For many years now the Diocese of Phoenix has hosted a Catholic Men's Conference.  This conference has been a day for all Catholic men in the area to come together to be inspired and to be renewed in their Catholic Faith.  This event has always been well attended by men not only from the Diocese of Phoenix but by those from the Dioceses of Tucson and Gallup, as well.

Update on Brother Ross Estivillo

[received from Joe Keaney, PGK, Co. 10762]

I met with Ross today. He is suffering from cancer and his situation is not bright. He has been at Cornerstone Hospital  for almost 2 months and there seems to be little they can do for him at this time. He would like to go back to Wilcox and stay at home for the remainder of his days, but the hospital is considering sending him to another facility in the Tucson area. His wife stays with him, in his room, at the Cornerstone.

He was Grand Knight for his council in Wilcox for 10 years, and has great respect for the Knights. If you have time please stop in and say hello to Ross.

            Thanks Joe K.

He would like to welcome all who would care to spend some time with him.

Holy Hour for Persecuted Christians in Iraq

Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix, site of prayer event on August 22, 2014

Dear Brother Knights:

By now, you've heard about the horrible persecution of the Christians of Iraq. These are desperate times for the Church in Iraq, where ISIS terrorists seized control of Mosul June 11. A week later, they demanded that all Christians either convert to Islam, pay the "infidel" tax or die. Many Christians were killed outright.

Christians have lived on the Nineveh plain (Mosul) for 1,600 years, but now, thousands have had to flee to surrounding villages or Kurdistan. Many were stripped of money, passports, jewelry, vehicles and even their shoes at ISIS checkpoints.

On August 1, 2014 the Mar Abraham Church in Scottsdale held a candlelight vigil to focus attention on the plight of Christians who were driven from their home by the Islamic State. This event was well attended by our Brother Knights. Still, the Christians of Iraq need our continued prayer support.

Brothers, I am asking you to attend a Holy Hour on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. This will take place at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral, 6351 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85017. Fr. Felix Shabi, pastor of the Chaldean Catholic Church of Arizona, will offer the scriptural reflection at the holy hour.

There will be a collection taken with proceeds sent to the Catholic Church in Iraq to help the persecuted Christians there. Let's pack the cathedral on August 22nd and show our brothers and sisters in Iraq that their suffering is not going unnoticed.

Fraternally yours,

Larry Becker

State Deputy

Silver Rose is in Tucson

Worthy Chapter President, District Deputy and Brother Luis.  Greetings.  Today, I met with Worthy District Deputy Jon Gordon between Yuma and Tucson to receive the Silver Rose and accompanying materials and transport them to Tucson.  Praise be to God, all went well and the Silver Rose is with me in Tucson.  Could you please help spread the word that the Silver Rose is now in Tucson and will be for only a limited time (this next week) and will move to Sierra Vista next Saturday? St.  Augustine Cathedral council has the Silver Rose reserved for next Friday night, August 8 and I intend to make arrangements to transfer it to Worthy District Deputy Larry Powers on Saturday, August 9.  I understand that he will make arrangements with Worthy District Deputy Bob Julian  for the transfer to Phoenix after the Silver Rose travels through Southeast Arizona.  So if you or our Worthy Chapter Secretary could help spread the word, it would be most appreciated:

The Silver Rose is in Tucson from today (August 1)   until Friday  (August 8).  All councils are encouraged to contact District Deputy Tom Bayham by phone (906-5170) or by email (tmb@tuslaw.com) to arrange for the Silver Rose to travel to their councils and parishes.  Parish Holy Hours are encouraged with the permission of your Pastors.  Many prayer books are available for an approximately half hour prayer and meditation, and the Silver Rose may be displayed in appropriate places for viewing by the entire congregation for a larger block of time.

FW: From Mar Abraham Chaldean Church- Press Release

Please give this message a wide distribution.

Brothers,

The Knights of Columbus are urged to support our brother and sister Catholics from the Chaldean Catholic Church of Iraq by attending the following Mass and prayer vigil.

The Msgr. Felix Shabi, Corbishop of the Chaldean Catholic Vicariate of Arizona, will celebrate a Mass at 6:30 p.m. August 1, 2014. It will take place at the Mar Abraham Church, 6816 E. Cactus Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85254. Mass will be followed by a candlelight vigil at 7 p.m. The event is being held to focus attention on the plight of Christians who were driven from their home by the Islamic State, the group that gained control of Mosul in early June.

Crosses were taken down from churches that were later looted, burned or destroyed. An announcement made from loudspeakers in Mosul on June 18, 2014, demanded that Christians either pay the jizya – a special tax reserved for 'infidels' — convert to Islam, or die. Many Christians fled the city and were later stripped of their vehicles, money, and jewelry. They have sought refuge in some of the Christian villages near Mosul or in Kurdistan.

"The Lord Jesus said 'Without me, you can do nothing," so we are putting all our trust in him, imploring him so that he can hear our prayers and the prayers of the persecuted brothers and sisters in Iraq, so that he can hear the cries of their agony," said Msgr. Felix Shabi. "We also have to raise our voices to ask the government to do something to save these poor people, either by creating a safe haven for them in Iraq or by facilitating their exit visas so they can join their families here in America or elsewhere."

Alert: Fortnight for Freedom

Dear Brother Knights,

On June 21 – July 4, Catholics throughout the nation will commemorate the annual Fortnight for Freedom. This period of prayer, fasting, and advocacy will be a time for faithful Americans to respond to the many threats to religious liberty our country currently faces. This year’s theme is the “Freedom to Serve,” which highlights the good that Catholic apostolates do for the poor.

For information on this year’s fortnight and suggestions on what you can do on behalf of our religious liberties, we encourage you to visit www.fortnight4freedom.org. As leaders in your parish communities, we encourage you to organize and participate in activities in cooperation with your priests and parish leadership. Individually, we ask you to offer special prayers and sacrifices on behalf of our precious First Amendment religious freedoms during the Fortnight.

The Knights of Columbus throughout the years has been steadfast in its defense of our First Amendment right to religious freedom. In union with our priests and bishops, we can continue this legacy through our enthusiastic support of the Fortnight for Freedom.

Supreme Knight Video: Membership Growth is key to Success of the Order

Brother Knights,

Membership growth is essential to the success of the Knights of Columbus. With the addition of each new member, the Order is better able to serve the Church and those most in need in our communities. But it isn’t just the Order that benefits from new members. Each new member benefits too.

As a new brother Knight, a man has the opportunity to grow in his faith through our many programs and resources and to live out his faith through service to God and his neighbor. A new brother Knight also gains access to our top-rated insurance to protect his family.

When a man joins the Knights of Columbus, it’s a win for everyone: for him, for his family, for his Church, for the community and for the Order.

During the recent 2014 Organizational Meeting of State Deputies, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson addressed the Order’s leaders on keys to success in their role, including the need to grow each jurisdiction in membership. Excerpts from his address are included in this short video.

Please take the time to watch these remarks, share them with your brother Knights, and use them as inspiration as you plan your own recruitment efforts for the coming fraternal year.

March 5, 2014

Worthy Grand Knights,

Preparations are underway for our 107th State Convention to be held on May 16th and 17th, in Tucson, AZ.  We look forward to seeing all of you there.

One of the focal points at the Saturday evening Memorial Mass is the reading of the State Necrology List.  This list consists of the names of deceased Brother Knights from each Arizona council who have been called to their eternal rest since last year’s Convention.

Your council’s Necrology list should consist of the names of Brothers who have died between May 1, 2013 and April 30, 2014.

Due to the time it takes to prepare the full Necrology List please provide your council’s Necrology list to me by May 3, 2014.   You can send it to me via email (preferred) or by US Mail.   This date is very firm.   The final list must be compiled and then go to the printers.   If your council’s list is late your departed Brother’s name might not get included on the printed version of the list. Please do your best to be on time.

One last thing - please denote any Brothers you have included on your list that served as either a District Deputy or State Officer.

Once again, thank you for your timely response to this request.  Our past Brother Knights deserve to be remembered at this special Mass.
